Sense of Place in the Airport

Come join me as I give a walking tour of our airport! The new expansion of the Reagan Washington National Airport opened in 1996 and by 2013 it had become the busiest airport in the Washington Metro region. This one- to one- and-a-half-hour tour will discuss the design elements as they relate to “Sense of Place.” Cesar Pelli utilized stylistic elements of the city’s architecture as well as 30 commissioned pieces of art to create a light-filled space that gives a geographic connection to the nation’s Capital. It gives travelers, airport staff and airline employees views of the city, views of the runways and interaction with the artwork within the space. It also offers a unique transition from the vehicular means of travel on the ground to the enplaning.
